Carroll "Lex" LeFon

Carroll LeFon — Neptunus Lex — was born in 1960 and entered the United States Navy, where he became a decorated naval aviator flying the F/A-18 Hornet. He flew combat missions, led a fighter squadron, and rose to command a naval air station before retiring. Along the way, he wrote.

He started his blog in roughly 2002. Over the following decade he accumulated a devoted international readership that included not just military families and veterans, but civilians drawn in by the sheer quality of the writing. He could place a reader in the cockpit of a night carrier approach, or in his kitchen watching his youngest daughter, with equal authority and equal grace. He wrote about the wars, about politics and history, about honor and loss. He was always honest. He was never dull.

He died on March 6, 2012, in a training accident at Fallon Naval Air Station, Nevada. He was 51 years old.
