Ah, Well

So. I’m off again.

It was a wonderful week back at home. A practically perfect Thanksgiving, followed by a very relaxing weekend. Shot a high score at golf and a low score at skeet (with SNO).

Went for a long ride on the moto this A.M. Bagels and Starbucks to start off with in Del Mar, in the company of the beautiful people in sweats and Ugg boots. Afterwards the 101 (coast highway) to wrap things up. In the hamlet of Solana Beach I discovered a gem: Off the beaten path, on a beach-side road I’d never have even noticed in a car, was an access point to the shore. Down a long set of winding steps to the tidal basin, cut out of the surrounding bluffs, I saw the sea birds race against the incoming tide, the two middle-aged surfers going out, the sun rising up the shoreline. I saw a young girl of about 16, a soccer player I suspect, running the stairs for training. I saw a “lady of a certain age,” probably near 70, walking up and down the same stair set. I saw all the years in between the two of them roll out like a golden carpet made from the experiences of all the women that have ever lived, or ever will.

Up and down the bluffs were the multi-million dollar houses, with the multi-million dollar views. And down below them, the relentless sea, always chipping away at the sea walls, always chipping away at the bluffs themselves. Ashes, ashes, all fall down. Soon come?

Depends upon your definition of soon. The sea can afford to be patient. It’s only a matter of time.

Time.

Off again, off to sea. The third strike group in a relatively short period of time. Maintaining the professional attitude, the same level of intensity – that’ll be the challenge. But we’ve got two things working for us: One, it’s like being on the last segment of a hard, 30 minute run – for the first five minutes, you just want to stop. After ten, you’re invested. At fifteen, you’re on the backside, all downhill from here.

And on the last increment? When the timer clicks over from 10:00 to 9:59?

Oh, yeah, baby. Now you’re on single digits.

We’re on single digits, now.

And the second thing going for us? Oh, yeah: No one is shooting at us.

So. We’ll see y’all in the funny pages! Good luck with all your shopping.
