Patio dining at the Sofia Hotel’s Currant Brasserie down town, with a pair of old friends. Charming conversation about times past and times to come.
We both had Oysters Rockefeller on spinach, drizzled with the essence of Pernod, topped with a Gruyere crust. The lady had a three heart salad of romaine, palm and artichoke with Camembert dressing – I had the lobster bisque. For the third course we both had pan seared filet mignon (rare and rare – the state of California be damned) with potato gratin, glazed turnips and asparagus graced by a Bordeaux reduction. We parted ways on dessert, with the lady choosing a chocolate almond dacqouise cake with raspberries and amaretto crème. I continue to believe my blackberry linzer torte with the vanilla bean crème anglais was the wiser choice.
In accompaniment, we sipped on Va De Vie sparkling, a Mondavi Fumé Blanc, and Fiddlehead Pinot Noir in sequence. For desert she chose the Mondavi Moscato D’Oro, while I went with a tawny porto. A cup of coffee helped to clear the air for the drive home, which the lady graciously offered to perform.
I got lucky with that one.
